The dull ache between us

The darkness looms over us

Like an eternal winter

That never leaves the land

I felt stuck in the past

Unable to imagine

What it was like

To feel the emptiness beside me

I felt my eyes gloss over with water

Resembling the cold ocean

I could feel the dagger in my back

But at some point,

The pain had dulled

Leaving behind a gash

That didn't close

I tried to walk away

When I remembered your blood red eyes

And the way your fists clenched

Like you were torn

Between two choices

To lash out or hold it in

But even now

When I see you standing,

All I can see is the sun hitting the ocean

And I can't look away

Because I know deep down

I would still run to you

And love you

As if the pain didn't happen
